About Bone Island

Bone Island is a literal translation of Key West’s original name in Spanish, Cayo Hueso (mistranslated into Key West, although it is the westernmost of the inhabited Keys). It was more commonly translated as Isle of Bones. Bone Island came into modern usage in the early ’90s when my husband, Mark Hedden, and former Solares Hill editor Ann Boese started a company called Bone Island Press. They published a great newspaper, the Bone Island Sun. Since then many other businesses have used the name Bone Island. If you don’t believe me that Mark and Ann were first, please point to a business pre-1992 that used the Bone Island name. Today Mark owns Bone Island Bird Expeditions. Ann is a writer and publishing consultant in Savannah.

  • Hello, do you know where I could pick up a handful of old copies of the Bone Island Sun newspaper? Thanx, Keith

Hi Keith, this reply is shamefully delayed but I’m afraid I don’t have a good answer for you. There are copies of the Bone Island Sun in our attic, but they aren’t leaving the house since they’re the only ones we’ve got. It might be worth checking the Florida History Room at the Monroe County Public Library to see if they have copies; if so, you could view them but not take them.

  • Well, this reply is still more shamefully delayed than was your own shamefully delayed reply. Hm, what if you shipped a very few issues to me so I could make my own copies and return them to you? Email reply is best since I don’t visit this site but maybe once a year or so. Thanx, Keith
